Check In...
Did you do anything fun this week?
That's a question I ask Katie every week when we talk on the phone. I do it for a few reasons. First off I don't want our entire conversation to be about work, health, and the weather. Another reason is that it actually gives me a lot of insight into who she is.
If I didn't ask her if she did anything fun I'd never know that she plays a variety of new board games. With rules as complex as anything she made up as a kid.
If I didn't ask her if she did anything fun I'd never have known that she likes to go karaoke. Her dad was a singer in his youth but doesn't want to karaoke because he laments not keeping his voice in practice. I am a car singer extraordinaire but have never stepped up onto a stage with a microphone and let other people who aren't trapped in the vehicle with me listen.
I also get to hear about parties she's going to, movies she's seen, video games she's playing, date night dining choices.
The things that make life worth living.
And the last reason is to remind both of us of that fact. Do something fun. That's the good stuff in life. Fun. We have to make money. We have to clean house. We have to go to the grocery store. We can try and positive psychology all of that around by using the "get to" switch but you don't have to do the switch for fun things. We get to go to the movies. We get to eat at the new Korean BBQ place. We get to sing songs by Nine Inch Nails at the top of our lungs.
Right now, maybe more than ever, it's important to make sure you are doing something for fun. So maybe check in every week and ask yourself, did you do anything fun this week? And if you didn't make sure you do next week.
Today I'm going to watch a movie Katie recommended ages ago and I keep meaning to watch.
Do something for fun.
You get to do that.
