Coastal Waters...
Brent and I are going away for the weekend. We are headed to the coast for a few days. One of the greatest things about living in Portland is that you can go from the mountains to the coast easily. You can ski on the glacier (what's left of it) in the morning and then head to the coast for a bonfire and s'mores in the evening.
We all say things like this. That that's the best part of being here. How close everything is. The mountains! The Gorge! The coast! But very few of us actually do the Hood to Coast on a typical day. I mean the race even takes a couple of days. Well, it takes around 24 hours but it's spread out over Friday and Saturday.
ANYWAY... We have access to a lot of wonderful spaces is what I'm saying. And often we forget to take advantage of them. Like we haven't been to the coast since before the pandemic. We used to make it out at least once a year, but we just haven't for a long time.
A while ago (like two bosses at least ago) Brent's boss got him gift cards to a hotel out at Cannon Beach (Skippy, this is the beach I took you to). We put them aside and planned on using them "someday." Now part of why they went to the side is that we have never stayed at the beach. It's a day trip. We leave early, get there for low tide, explore the tide pools, maybe wander around town a little, hit up Tillamook on the drive home for some curds and ice cream and are back before the crowds get to bad.
But Brent really needs a break. Like a change of scenery, head clearing, break. So we are putting them to use.
The funny thing (to me) is that when he got them I thought it was a bit of a dumb recognition. One, like I mentioned we don't go to the coast. And two, they were for a lot of money. So like how many times did she think we were going to head out there anyway? When I booked and made the reservations I found out that she expected us to go out there for a weekend. That was it. The rooms are as expensive as the place we stay in Hawaii. And you can't even get in the water!
Okay, you could, but you'd freeze your ass off. That's why it's the coast, not the beach. We go to the coast in Oregon, we go to the beach in Hawaii. I might dip my toes in the water, but I won't be swimming. Even though it will be really lovely, for the coast, and hit about 67 maybe even 70. That's outstanding weather for the coast. We've been there in July and worn sweatshirts and beanies. But still not swimming in the 50 degree ocean weather.
Katie and her girlfriend are going to come over and watch the cats, because they are pandemic cats and we have only left them alone overnight for one trip. Who knows if it really bothers them to be left alone, but it feels like it bothers them, so we try and arrange trips with Katie so she can stay with them. Luckily Katie is a good sport about it and comes over to have Tig ignore her and Tux demand his five minutes of snugs and then ignore her too.
Because I'm going to be taking a break, that means you get a break as well. If we get back early enough I might write my monthly recap on Monday, but I also might push it to Tuesday. Either way, you won't hear from me for a few days.
Try and get out and enjoy the weekend. It's going to get miserable hot here (thus the really nice weather on the coast) so if you are in the Portland area plan according. For the heat, and for the grumps like me that come out when it's hot. And try to manage your intake of news. It's not great. Again.
Happy end of June!
