Election Day!
Okay, so there is nothing really important on the ballot here locally. Library funding basically, which is important, but not like who will lead us important. In other parts of the country there are more significant items. There are a few Governor's races and one very interesting Mayoral race. Also, Prop 50 in California where they will try to fight back on the Red redistricting that is happening as Trumplicans try and secure a minority majority rule for the rest of all time.
As of today, as of right now, it looks like these elections will matter. They will count. There will be votes cast and counted and abided by. I say that now, but who knows what will come tomorrow. But for right now it looks like free and fair elections are the flavor of the day.
It made my 30 Days of Thanks post on Bluesky. I'm grateful for it. I'm thankful for it. And I for sure do not take it for granted.
Everyone who knows me knows that I'm not sure that midterms will happen at all, and even if they do if they will matter. There is partly the redistricting I mentioned before where Red states are trying their level best to just lock in as many Republican seats as they possibly can. But since there are Blue states pushing back on that I'm not sure that that will be enough for Trump.
He's already trying his best to get troops into every Blue state. And a Republican donor bought the largest voting machine company in the country. Those two things together (or even separate) could rig the whole thing in his favor. He's also putting people in place to "monitor" and to "supervise" elections that are election deniers. Who would do everything they could to toss out valid votes to ensure a Red win.
So yeah, I'm not optimistic for midterms.
But today? Today I think it matters. I think people out voting for the candidates they choose matters. I think sending a message with your vote is important. I think hoping for a better future is a good thing.
And I think that if people see those votes make a difference they will be more likely to fight to secure a vote next time.
So for today I'm thankful for Election Day.
Vote.
