Fluff Pieces...
My Google news feed is full of nonsense. Now that's mostly my fault. I've told it not to show me so many things that now it fills the space with nonsense stuff.
And it's also my fault because often I look at the picture and the headline and I decide to read the nonsense. So yeah...
A few weeks ago there was a headline about Suzi Quatro. She's a musician and she also played Leather Tuscadero on Happy Days. I LOVED Leather Tuscadero. She was so freaking cool. A lot of my look from that point forward could be traced back to Leather. Oh and Joan Jett.
The tough girl chic. I couldn't afford all of the leather, but made due with jeans and t-shirts and wrist cuffs to ape the look as closely as I could. Oh and a shag haircut bordering on mullet at times. It was the 80s. Were you even alive in the 80s if you didn't have a mullet at least once?
Suzi told two stories in the interview that made me laugh. One was during her audition for Happy Days she wore what she called her street leathers, not the outfit she normally wore on stage, just her rambling around town look. When she got there the casting director was like, Oh smart choice to dress like the character! And yeah, she hadn't. She had no idea. But the look of Leather Tuscadero and the look of Suzi Quatro were the same vibe for sure.
The second story was about a young teenage fan of hers. Like super obsessed type. Would hang out in hotel lobbies just to see her and talk to her sort of fan. Well she ended up starting her own band and Suzi got a chance to go see them and loved them. You know the band, The Runaways. Yep, Joan Jett was also a huge Suzi Quatro fan. And a lot of her look was based on Suzi's.
So basing my look off of Suzi and Joan was really more basing it off of Suzi squared.
The whole thing made me smile. Reading her interview where she talked about other female artists letting her know how influential she was to them. The time she spent on Happy Days. The fact that she still dresses the same, but less leather now, more denim. I was apparently ahead of the curve with that one!
Sometimes giving in to the fluff nonsense piece is a good thing. And so much more enjoyable than yet another piece about how Trump is destroying the country and the world.
But I will have to be honest here...I liked Pinky Tuscadero's hand snaps better than Leather's thigh slap finger guns.
A sentence that means NOTHING to people who didn't live and breathe Happy Days.
