Give it Up...
I have a Lenten Season suggestion....give up complaining about how other people aren't doing it right.
Since Trump took office there has been a drumbeat on the Left about how nobody is DOING anything. Everyone is just watching it all happen and nobody is doing anything at all.
I admit, I have given in to this despair a few times. But it's not actually true.
Almost immediately there were lawsuits filed. And yes, I know, we aren't sure that it will mean anything considering they will just ignore the results they don't like but...They still need to be filed. There still needs to be a record that what is happening is illegal. It's unconstitutional.
There have been multiple protests.
The 50501 organization has held multiple 50 protests, 50 states, one day cycles at state capitals, or offices of representatives.
Speaking of representatives, people have been showing up to town hall meetings in droves. Want to know how effective that's been? The Republicans are calling it fake and hiding away from holding more town halls. You know it's working when they are blaming Soros and hiding.
Every weekend, and a lot of weekdays, you can find people protesting at Tesla dealerships around the country. People are selling off their cars and not buying new ones. Tesla stock is tanking. This is a big deal. That's where the majority of Elon's wealth resides. Tesla and Starlink, and people of influence in other countries have been cancelling Starlink contracts. Protests don't just have to be local.
For the presidential address last night people on the Left screamed at Democrats to DO SOMETHING. Ron Wyden held a virtual town hall. AOC did a live Q&A session. Elizabeth Warren made a show of scrolling her phone while he talked. A group of representatives including Jasmine Crockett stood up part way through and took off their jackets to show messages on T-shirts as they walked out. Rep. Al Green stood and yelled that Trump had no mandate to gut medicare until he was removed from the chamber. Other democrats in attendance held up signs with messages. All of those are protests.
And people on the Left said...No! Not like that!
I get it. I do. We want something big and dramatic and choreographed. We want it to look like there have been meetings amongst our leadership and they have a grand plan that is showy and spectacular.
But that's not going to happen.
What's going to happen are small moments and big moments and consistent moments and random moments of rebellion against what is happening. And we need to be supportive of them.
If someone does something small and we shut them down because it's not enough they aren't going to move on to something bigger. They are just going to stop.
We need people to not stop.
I know I keep harping on doing what you can. Doing what you need to. But we also need to give grace to others and applaud them for what they are doing. Even if it's not what we would do. Or how we would have handled it. Or what we had hoped they would do.
Give up complaining about how other democrats aren't protesting the right way. Not just for lent. Give it up for the health of the party and the needed strength moving forward.
We all need to draw strength from each other. They are trying to tear our country apart right now, don't help them.
