Save Us From the Discourse...

There is a new version of Harry Potter hitting HBO soon. The first trailer was released today. Which means another round of The Discourse.

Normally I stay away from it all. If you don't know by now that JK Rowling is a transphobic terf monster I cannot help you. If you don't understand that she's serious when she says she will use all of the profits from her work to fight against trans women then you are being willfully stupid. If you built your whole personality around a book series and that's more important to you than the literal lives of trans women then I don't know what to tell you.

But...

Someone whose work I read posted about it and I interacted with him. Totally good faith effort on my part, and I believe on his in his replies. If I hadn't been a regular reader of his I wouldn't have gone in with the same mindset. Basically I know he's been questioning the whole tribalization of America. The "against you" mentality we all are falling into. The fact that you cannot just disagree anymore, you have to demonize. And I get it. I struggle at times with how mean we've all gotten as well. He was looking at the art/artist and fan nuance he thought was lacking in someone posting that if you watch the new series you are a bad person.

He thought there was a lot more to consider.

I told him as the mother of a trans child there really wasn't.

And that's always where I am going to wind up with JKR. She spends her money making the world unsafe for my daughter. She winds up her still impressive fan base and sends them frothing into the wilds to hunt down people who disagree and savage them. Then she plays the fucking victim and tries to sue people into being nice to her.

She also uses the whole "I was sexually assaulted so you can't say anything to me" shut down technique. And that's such fucking weaksauce. One, sadly, being sexually assaulted doesn't make her special, the odds are strikingly high that the person she is arguing with was also the victim of sexual assault. And two, it wasn't a trans woman on a sports team, in a bathroom, or in a domestic abuse shelter who abused her. It was a cis man. And the fact that she kept Johnny Depp on her movie after a credible accusation of assault shows that she really does have the ability to differentiate her assaulter from other people, even men who have been accused of assault. So miss me with that bullshit.

JKR is vile. She uses her money to make the world unsafe for my daughter and other trans women. She's made it clear that she will continue to do so and any money she makes will go toward that end. So there is no nuance for me. She's vile and I will do nothing that gives her more money.

I don't know if I made him reconsider his stance. If I made him see that sometimes there really isn't nuance. Bad is bad and that's that. But I tried. I kept my calm. I didn't call anyone any names. I tried to get him to "hear" me. Because The Discourse may have started again, but it's not just discourse to me. It's my daughter's life.
