What Files?
One of my oddest memories of when Brent's dad died happened on the day of his funeral. Bill Richardson, who was then the Governor of New Mexico, called to speak with Ann and give her his condolences. She would not take the call.
I remember thinking...Daaaaamn.... and wondering what the story was there.
See Jack had been involved with the whole political machinery of New Mexico. Not just his military stuff and the DA's office. I've written about how we went from no funeral, just a small get together of family and a few close friends to the military getting involved and ending up with a full military honors funeral with HUNDREDS of people there. People from every place he had served and worked. Military, politicians, legal. All of it.
So what I wasn't sure of was if it was personal beef with Richardson, something he and Jack tussled with in the past. If it was just Ann was done with her mourning being co-opted by politics. Or if it was just Ann being Ann. She didn't want to, so she wouldn't.
But for me, it was like, this is the governor calling. You really aren't going to take that call? And not like, tell him I appreciate the thought, or can you call later or something nice making like that but just flat out, no I don't want to talk to him. Period.
When some of the documents were unsealed in one of the Jeffrey Epstein cases Bill Richardson's name was mentioned. And not just once in passing, something like half a dozen times. One of the women, who was a girl when the abuse happened, testified that she was instructed to give him massages. See, Epstein had a ranch in New Mexico as well as his nasty little island. You didn't have to be in the flight logs to be part of his network.
So in that moment, reading about Richardson's connection to Epstein, it made me really proud of Ann for not taking his call. Even though I'm pretty sure that wasn't the reason why. If my mother-in-law had known that Richardson and Epstein were abusing young girls she would not have just ignored his calls, she would have been hunting for his balls. But I was still glad that for at least that moment she was able to shut him down from something he wanted.
Bill Richardson was a democrat. He did a lot of things in his political life that I approve of. He was an icon of New Mexico and National politics. But from the testimony released he also was fine with young girls giving him massages. From not just turning a blind eye to abuse, which would have been bad enough, but participating in it, which makes me sick. A piece of shit, in other words.
And that's the part of the whole Epstein thing that boggles my brain. That for some people the politics of it make it okay or not okay.
Now, I'm not saying that everyone on the flight logs is a piece of shit. There are people who could have used the plane during the times he lent it out for humanitarian reasons. He courted the rich and famous and not all of them, I assume, were part of the abuse. I would guess that not all of them even knew about it. But the ones who did? The ones who participated? I don't care which side of the aisle they are on, they should have gone down.
Like the man who he called his closest friend. The one who said, “I’ve known Jeff for 15 years. Terrific guy. He’s a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side.” The one who was president when Epstein "commited suicide" in jail? Yeah, it's weird to me that he has such a loyal following of people who somehow believed him that he would be the one to release all of the Epstein files. The clients lists. All of it. Except now there isn't anything to release. Supposedly. The files they swore they had, they don't seem to exist.
Like the missing minute of video on the prison recording. Just gone.
And yet, the group that made their entire identity about protecting children. About hunting down the sex abusers. The child traffickers. The ones who have been calling for the release of the Epstein files for ages. All of them? How in the world are they still figuratively and sometimes literally still taking Trump's calls?
I will never understand how you can justify bad behavior of someone if they share your politics. If they are pieces of shit, they are pieces of shit. Don't support them. Don't make excuses for them. Don't fucking vote for them.
Don't take their calls.
I'll never know why she didn't take that call that day. But I will always be really proud that she didn't.
