It's Got a Good Beat...
...but can you dance to it?
Brent and I are keeping a list of the worst songs. To make the list we both have to agree that it's just the worst. These are the songs that you can't change the station quick enough when they come on, the ones that you judge someone just a little bit for liking, the ones where you aren't exactly sure how they got made. And yes, this is purely subjective, hence why we both have to agree for the song to make the list.
It was inspired by a David Bowie song, so that lets you know how subjective these sort of things are.
But all music is that way. We all have styles or types of music that we love that other people just don't get and vice versa.
For me, I also have music I should like, it's right in what I normally like, but just don't.
Bruce Springsteen is one for me that I should like. I love a gravelly voiced story teller. His politics are right in my sweet spot. Everything about him means I should love him. But I don't. So much so that my favorite Bruce Springsteen song turned out to be by another artist who I just THOUGHT was Springsteen for a long time. Now to be fair, I won't rush to change the station just because one of his songs comes on, and a few I know all the words just because of how much airplay it's gotten, but he just does not do it for me. None of his songs have made the list even though Brent's not a fan either.
I don't like Bon Jovi either, so maybe it's just a New Jersey thing. And again, they do really good charity work, I was a teenager when they were HUGE but I've never like them. I think for them though it was because you could not escape them when I was younger. Constant radio and MTV presence.
Kenny Chesney is another one. He's got the good vibes, easy going, life's a beach thing, but like Jimmy Buffett it's like he went on vacation once and decided to make it his whole personality. I should like both of them more than I do. I mean, I also have made being on vacation my entire personality (😏). But...about one song in and I'm done, thank you very much.
The Pretenders. I should LOVE The Pretenders. The songs are in my range so I can sing along right in the pocket. Rocker chick lead singer but...there was always something about them I just didn't like. And then hearing interviews with Chrissie Hynde later in life and whew...she's something. So maybe some of that crankypants energy was seeping through?
And then there are some bands that I used to not care for at all and now I've grown to appreciate. Depeche Mode is in that category. I think I heard the wrong Depeche Mode song first and that's what set me off on the "Don't like them" path. But even when I didn't like them one of their songs is one of my favorite songs. Not favorite Depeche Mode songs, but FAVORITE songs. I just can't get enough of it... (HA! I'm hilarious!)
The Beatles are a band like that for Brent. He understood they were huge when we were growing up but did not appreciate the music. Now he's like, oh yeah, this IS really good.
The Rolling Stones are still in the Nah, category for him. I'm split on them. Some of it I like, some of it I just don't. But no Stones songs are on the list because we don't agree. But the fact that they are in consideration, again, shows you just how subjective music is.
And, yes, I've owned up to it before, my taste is music is generally considered suspect by those who "know what good music is" and "can carry a tune what the hell is that noise you are making?" and "that can't possibly be a real song, you are making up the lyrics to mess with me." But even with all of that, music is just what speaks to you. Or sings to you as the case may be. And there are bands out there that should sing to me but I so wish they wouldn't...
