Summer Heat...

Part Two

Olivia and Jayde were sprawled out on the floor of Olivia's apartment. The ceiling fan and two box fans going at full speed.

"How is it possible to be this hot?"

"Good genetics?"

Jayde playfully smacked Olivia's arm. "You know what I meant!"

Olivia smiled and rolled over trying to get some airflow on her sweaty back. "I can remember reading books when I was a kid where families would go to the lake, or to the house at the beach during the summer. Like, for the whole summer. I didn't realize that it was because the city was too hot to stay in."

"For sure, if you could leave you would right? But instead we soldier on. Lowly worker bees in the giant government machine."

"Do you think once we are running things we could convince everyone to move the center of government to someplace cooler? Like northern Washington state? We could just rename a city there and not even have to change the letterhead."

"Probably not. And it's not all that cool there anymore either. My mother said that it was going to be in the 90s all next week."

"And how is your mother?"

Jayde smiled, "She's fine, she asked how you were and even got your name right this time."

"Do they hate me?"

"They don't hate you they just wish..."

"That I had a penis?"

"Ha! Oh no. I mean for years having a lesbian daughter gave them bonus liberal points. Now I'm not so special, everyone has a gay kid. And they like you a lot more than they did Belinda."

"Because she broke your heart?"

"She didn't break my heart. She just went back to her high school sweetheart. And to be fair to them, they did ask if I wanted to join them."

Olivia laughed, "A thruple? They asked you to be part of a thruple? You won't even share french fries!"

"If you want fries order your own. I ordered fries because I like fries. Not so you can eat half. But yeah, I mean more power to them, but that's not really my thing. But they are really happy and we're all still friends so it's okay."

"So why didn't she like Belinda?"

"Because Belinda said having children in a our current hellscape wasn't in her plans."

"And somebody wants to be a grandmother?"

"Desperately. So they just wish you'd marry me, find a good donor, and start cranking out the babies."

"Aww, are you proposing?"

"Oh stop it. But yeah, unless we tell her she's going to be a grandmother she's going to be a little reserved around you."

"But what if we don't want kids?"

"Then she's going to go back to calling you by the wrong name. But don't worry, I'll always know your name is...it's...wait...don't tell me, I'll get it."

Olivia laughed and rolled over again. She liked hearing Jayde talk about a future that included her, even if she wasn't sure she ever wanted to have kids. Maybe she could just get used to her future mother in law calling her Lisa or Julie.
