I Do My Hair Toss...

Yesterday when Sarah was cutting my hair I told her I just didn't know how to handle it like I used to. Which, to be fair, before my hair care routine consisted of washing it, combing it, letting it dry. Boom! Done.

Straight hair with zero frizz or texture was easy.

Once I embraced that it was straight and would stay straight and would fight me to be straight that is. I mean I spent a lot of teenage years with a perm, hot rollers, a curling iron, and industrial strength hair spray trying to get it to hold some curl. But once I embraced the straight in my late 20s I never really looked back. And especially once we found Sarah twenty (?) years ago. She also had stick straight hair that was the same thick but fine texture so could work wonders with mine.

I mean, she worked wonders with Brent's and Katie's as well and they have different hair texture. She's just a genius is all...but...we shared texture so she knew for sure what mine would and would not do.

Then over the past few years it started to do it's own thing. I didn't realize what was happening until now looking back. First it was my bangs. I'd wake up and they'd be kind of bent toward the side. I kept thinking I was sleeping on my face somehow. And then there was the dent kind of mid head. Well that must be from tying it back all the time.

And then when I cut it off...Sarah did a dry cut so she used the straightener on it in the shop to get it as straight as possible (after cutting off the donation length). Then I washed it the next day, combed it out, let it dry and...what the fuck happened here? Then ends were all kind of bushy. I tried to figure out if I had my hair bunched on my shoulders as it dried so it dried weird. I straightened it with the big barrel curling iron and went on my way.

The next time I washed it I looked at it after I combed it out. What is this? Is this a wave? ANd yes, yes it was. I took a picture and sent it to Sarah. "I think my hair is wavy now?" She told me the same thing had happened to hers, but only in the back. She was writing off her change to stress and GLP1s. I looked up "hair texture changes" online and found out it happens to a not insignificant number of women during peri and menopause. Hunh...another odd side effect no one talks about. I just hadn't really noticed because the weight of the length pulled it mostly straight.

So the experimentation has started. Curl creams, and plopping, and scrunching, oh my... And now basically I've come to the point where I wash it, finger comb it a little, put some product in it, scrunch it up a little and let it dry. It looks different every day. The style is kind of wild woman with no fucks to give.

Which I have to say amuses me.

I am liking the thought of my hair turning into a little old lady as well. It's doing its own thing. I don't have the gorgeous ringlets that Skippy has, and I don't have the beautiful soft curls that Brent does, but it's got something going on. And each day it's something different.

I think this means I won't ever cut it short again. I'm not sure that going its own way and doing its own thing works for a pixie cut, but maybe? It might be interesting to see what happens. And it is sort of straight at the crown before the waves take over so if I went REALLY short the waves might not even factor in.

But mainly what I've decided is not to fight it. To enjoy this new look for as long as it lasts. To just let it do it's thing and if I look like a crazy lady some days well...it's good for people to know what they are dealing with right?

The gray is also growing in nicely. It looks very intentional now instead of like I missed a hair coloring appointment.

Entering my wild old lady era and loving it.

Buckle up, everyone!
